For my next Dinner and a Show column at TheaterJones.com, I needed a restaurant near the Richardson Theatre Center. In my search I discovered a newly opened patio spot—The Fifth Fireside Patio and Bar—which debuted in February in Richardson. As a patio enthusiast, I spent an evening there and present my The Fifth Richardson Restaurant Review.

The Fifth Richardson Restaurant Review
Although The Fifth opened only in mid-February, the space already feels like a beloved neighborhood spot. The combination of well-executed food, a welcoming patio and live jazz made for an extended, relaxing evening. The name comes simply from this being the fifth restaurant to occupy the location—aptly titled “The Fifth.” After my visit, it seemed the fifth try was indeed the charm.

Cocktails and Wine at The Fifth

I discovered my new favorite cocktail here: a Hibiscus Gin and Tonic made with gin, hibiscus syrup, lime and sparkling water. It was bright and refreshing without being overly sweet, and impressively consistent from the first sip to the second—always a good sign at the bar. The Fifth’s craft cocktail list also features a Barrel Aged Old Fashioned, The Fifty Sazerac (rye, cognac, simple syrup, bitters and absinthe), a Blackberry Lemon Drop, a Rye Collins, a Paloma and a French 75. The wine list is extensive, with selections available by the glass and by the bottle, making it easy to pair drinks with any menu choice.
Starters

Appetizers range from calamari and a charcuterie board to tempura fried burrata, meatballs and multiple flatbreads. I chose the ahi tuna nachos—six crispy wontons topped with generous pieces of ahi, ponzu, sesame, wasabi cream, thin jalapeño, avocado and togarashi. The flavors were balanced and nuanced; despite the jalapeño, the dish wasn’t overpowering. Others at my table ordered the burrata and praised it; my server also recommended it as a top pick.

Salads, Entrees and Sides
The main menu covers a wide range of tastes: salads such as a beet and goat cheese salad and an herb-crusted salmon salad, soups, pan-seared salmon, veggie pasta, herb-roasted chicken, shrimp and grits, smoked short rib, Manhattan strip steak, tenderloin and ahi tuna. There’s something for lighter eaters and for those craving richer fare.
That said, the dish that stole my attention was the Fat Shady Burger. Built from a blend of ground strip steak, filet and brisket, it’s a serious burger. I ordered it without the brie and swapped fries for green beans to keep things a bit lighter. The patty itself was tender and flavorful enough to enjoy on its own, but the house-made potato bun, truffle aioli, herb mushrooms and greens add delightful complexity if you want the full experience.

My green beans were seasoned and cooked to a perfect medium—neither too soft nor too crunchy—with a basil aioli that elevated them. I also ordered Brussels sprouts as a side (they’re not listed as a formal side but the kitchen accommodated), and they arrived roasted with bacon and Peruvian peppers—an unexpected contender for favorite side of the night.

Coffee Done Right

As a self-described coffee snob, I appreciated that The Fifth serves French press coffee made with a blend from local Eiland Coffee Roasters. It was a satisfying way to finish the meal and reinforced the restaurant’s emphasis on quality ingredients and local partnerships.
A Climate-Controlled Patio + Live Jazz on Sundays

The patio is a major draw. During my visit it was nearly 90 degrees outside, but a breezy, adjustable panel ceiling helped keep sunlight at bay. Staff mentioned that climate control would soon be added to the patio, which will make outdoor dining far more comfortable in hot weather. Free live jazz is another highlight—Sunday evenings from 6–9pm feature Gabe Meadows and the Lush Life Trio with guest musicians; on my visit guest trumpet player Bill Taylor appeared.

They also offer a brunch menu, adding another reason to return. The combination of creative cocktails, thoughtful dishes, a hospitable bar and an inviting patio makes The Fifth a strong addition to Richardson’s dining scene.
