Smoked Turkey Shots Recipe for Thanksgiving Appetizers

Smoky, savory, sweet, and a little spicy — move over cheese and crackers. This Thanksgiving appetizer steals the show. Forget watching the Lions; welcome to a bite-sized flavor bomb: smoked turkey shots.

Today I’m sharing a fresh take on a fan favorite: smoked turkey shots. Inspired by pig shots, these shot-glass-sized cups are built from turkey kielbasa and bacon, filled with apple-studded stuffing, and finished with a sweet-and-spicy cranberry topping. They’re easy to prepare, great for a crowd, and deliver classic Thanksgiving flavors in a single bite.

Start by making the shot cups. Slice the turkey kielbasa into coins about ½ to ¾ inch thick — they just need to be large enough to stab with a toothpick and act as a sturdy base. For the sides, use medium- or thick-cut bacon. Thaw if needed and cut the strips in half so they wrap neatly around the kielbasa coins.

assembling the kielbasa and bacon for shots

To assemble each cup, wrap a half-slice of bacon around a kielbasa coin, overlapping the ends slightly, and secure with a toothpick through the center. Set the wrapped cups aside while you prepare the filling. A wire rack or tray makes it easy to move the cups on and off the grill later.

For the filling, I keep things practical: prepared stove-top stuffing works perfectly and saves time. Peel and dice one large apple into ½-inch chunks and fold it into the prepared stuffing. The apple adds brightness and texture that complements the savory sausage and bacon.

Now fill the cups: use a spoon to mound the apple-stuffed mixture into each bacon-wrapped kielbasa cup. Fill them to the top — they should look generously stuffed. You can pipe the stuffing from a zip-top bag if you want neater presentation, but a simple spoon works fine and keeps prep quick.

Lightly season the filled shots with your favorite BBQ rub. A sweeter rub with honey or brown sugar tones pairs well with the cranberries and apple, but use whatever you prefer. Arrange the shots on a wire rack for easy handling and transfer to the grill or smoker.

Cook these on a smoker or pellet grill preheated to 250°F. Total cook time is roughly two hours, but the real indicator is bacon crispiness. If you like extra-crispy bacon, leave them a little longer. Plan to check at 45 minutes so you can add the topping and let the flavors meld for the remaining time.

Cranberry lovers, this is your moment. In a small pot, combine one can of cranberry sauce with ¼ cup water, 1½ tablespoons brown sugar, ½ teaspoon cinnamon, and a pinch of cayenne pepper. Warm and whisk over medium heat until the mixture is smooth and slightly reduced. This sweet-and-spicy cranberry sauce lifts the shots and balances the savory components.

After the shots have smoked for about 45 minutes, add a small dollop of the cranberry sauce to each one. If you’re not a cranberry fan, a barbecue glaze or sweet-savory sauce can be used instead. Return the shots to the grill and continue cooking until the bacon reaches your desired crispiness.

When the bacon is crisp and the stuffing is warmed through — typically another 1 hour 15 minutes after adding the sauce — remove the shots from the grill and allow them to rest for about 15 minutes. They’ll firm up slightly and be safe to handle. Serve warm and watch guests reach for seconds.

These smoked turkey shots are a fun, crowd-pleasing appetizer that captures classic Thanksgiving flavors in a portable form. They’re easy to scale for a party, adaptable to available ingredients, and perfect for anyone who loves bold, balanced bites. Enjoy!
